Walther History, Today’s PDP Models, and the Vortex Venom Manufacturer Rebate

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Short answer: Walther started with Carl Walther’s rifle shop in 1886 and later built the PP, PPK, P99, and PPQ. Today’s flagship is the PDP. Buy a new qualifying PDP or PDP F-Series from November 1 through December 31, 2026, and Walther’s manufacturer rebate gives you a free Vortex Venom Enclosed Micro Red Dot, a $290 value, if you claim it by 11:59 PM CT on January 31, 2027.

From Carl Walther to the PDP

The company starts with Carl Wilhelm Freund Walther, born in 1858. He opened his own rifle making shop in 1886 in the Zella-Mehlis area of Thuringia, building hunting and target rifles. After Carl’s death in 1915, his son Fritz Walther took over, with his brothers beside him (Carl Walther, The First Century).

Fritz is the one who put Walther on the map as a pistol maker for police and everyday carry. He introduced the double-action Walther PP in 1929, then the shorter PPK in 1931. Carl Walther’s history page says both were a hit with public authorities and civilian buyers, and that they are still produced today.

The military side of that story is the P38. Carl Walther says it became the successor to the Luger 08 as a German service sidearm. After the war, Fritz restarted the company near Ulm. The P38 came back under the name P1 and became the sidearm for the new German armed forces.

The polymer era starts with the P99. At the IWA show in 1996, Walther introduced a new large-caliber pistol with a polymer frame instead of steel or light metal. Carl Walther credits Horst Wesp and his team for the design: a hammerless striker system, interchangeable backstraps, and an ambidextrous magazine release built into the trigger guard (Carl Walther, The Second Century).

The PPQ came next in that same duty-pistol line. American Rifleman dates the PPQ to 2011. Carl Walther’s later history page still treats the PPQ as the polymer service pistol that followed the P99.

Today the flagship is the Performance Duty Pistol, or PDP. A Guns.com review collected on Walther’s own site describes a September 2020 PDP rollout in Illinois. Walther’s PDP features page calls the PDP Standard the optic-ready flagship that started the line, with SuperTerrain slide serrations and a Performance Duty Trigger.

On this side of the Atlantic, Walther Arms, Inc. launched in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 2012, after related Umarex USA operations there that Walther dates to 2006. The company says the PPK has been manufactured in Arkansas since 2019 (Walther Arms).

The PDP Lineup Today

Walther groups the current PDP family on that same features page. The names you will see on a box, and in our catalog, line up like this.

PDP family What Walther lists An example we offer
Compact and Full Size (Standard) Compact or full-size frames, barrel lengths of 4, 4.5, or 5 inches, and the Performance Duty Trigger. Walther also lists Two Tone frame colors (gray, tan, and OD green) on the flagship PDP. PDP Compact 4 inch, optic ready (2851229); PDP Full Size 4.5 inch (2842475)
F-Series Designed for smaller hands, with a reduced trigger reach. Walther says it takes 20 percent less slide rack force. Barrel lengths are 3.5 or 4 inches (Walther F-Series). PDP F-Series 4 inch, optic ready (2842734)
Pro Walther’s Pro series includes the Professional ACRO, Pro-X, Pro-E, and Pro-SD, with Dynamic Performance Triggers. Compact or full-size frames, and barrel lengths of 4, 4.5, 4.6, or 5.1 inches. The Professional ACRO version ships with an optic and is excluded from the manufacturer rebate, as noted below. PDP Pro-E Compact 4 inch, optic ready (2884976)
Match Built for competition, available in polymer and steel frame. Walther lists a 5-inch full-size barrel, a Dynamic Performance Trigger, an optics-ready slide, and 10- or 20-round magazines. PDP Match Full Size (2872595)
Steel Frame A steel-frame PDP, with barrel lengths of 4, 4.5, or 5 inches, and either the Performance Duty Trigger or the Dynamic Performance Trigger. PDP Steel Frame Full Size 4.5 inch (2872285)
Black Walther PDP Compact 9mm pistol, model 2851229, shown from the left side with SuperTerrain slide serrations, a polymer frame, and no optic mounted

Those are examples, not the whole list. We also offer other PDP setups in that same family, including 10-round models, Two Tone finishes, and other Pro variants such as Pro-X and Pro-SD. Browse our semi-auto handguns if you want to look through them. Specs above come from Walther, not from a test we ran.

The Vortex Venom Manufacturer Rebate

This part is a manufacturer rebate from Walther, not a sale or a discount we are running. As of November 5, 2026, Walther’s promo page says that if you buy a new Walther PDP or PDP F-Series between November 1 and December 31, 2026, you get a free Vortex Venom Enclosed Micro Red Dot, a $290 value.

That value tracks what Vortex itself lists. Vortex posts the Venom Enclosed Micro Red Dot at $289.99 MSRP.

Walther describes the optic as an enclosed emitter, 1.75 ounces, with Shake Awake motion activation, a side-loading battery, a rated battery life of more than 20,000 hours, a 3 MOA dot, and 10 brightness settings (8 daylight and 2 night-vision compatible). The mounting footprint is DeltaPoint Pro. The optic mounting plate is not included.

We keep current manufacturer rebates, including this one, on our rebates page. Dates and rules can change, so read Walther’s page before you buy.

Which PDPs Qualify, and Which Do Not

Walther’s qualifying line is broader than a single SKU list. It says any new Walther PDP or PDP F-Series: Compact, Full Size, Pro, Match or Steel Frame. That covers the standard Compact and Full Size guns, the F-Series, the Match guns, the Steel Frame guns, and the Pro family.

On Walther’s own PDP page, the Pro series includes the Professional ACRO, Pro-X, Pro-E, and Pro-SD. The Professional ACRO is the one that ships with an optic already installed, so it sits on the excluded list. If you are looking at a Pro-E, Pro-X, or Pro-SD, those are Pro-series pistols without a factory optic in the name, but you should still match your exact model to Walther’s current terms.

Two things will knock a PDP out even if the name looks right. First, any PDP that comes with an optic preinstalled. Walther names the PDP Professional ACRO and SMU there. Second, any Meister Manufaktur model. Walther also leaves out guns bought on LE, VIP, or IOP discounts.

The six examples in the table above are optic-ready PDPs we offer in those qualifying families. They do not ship with a factory optic in the listing name, and they are not Meister Manufaktur guns. Walther did not publish a complete SKU checklist, so the final word is always the promo page and the claim form at waltherpromos.com.

How to Claim It With Walther

You file this with Walther, not with us. Keep the dated receipt that shows the purchase. Then:

  1. Buy a new qualifying Walther PDP between November 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026.
  2. Submit the claim at waltherpromos.com with a valid receipt, by 11:59 PM CT on January 31, 2027.

Walther allows only one redemption per serial number. If you buy more than one qualifying pistol, you may submit more than one claim. It asks you to allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing and handling of the optics.

The claim portal itself lists the offer as valid from 11/1/2026 to 12/31/2026. Fine print on Walther’s page also says Walther Arms Inc. reserves the right to modify, change, deny, or discontinue the promotion at any time.

If you have confirmed you can legally purchase a firearm and you want to order from us, our guide to buying a firearm online walks through ordering and shipping to your receiving FFL.

FAQ

Which Walther PDP models qualify for the free Vortex Venom?

Walther says any new PDP or PDP F-Series qualifies: Compact, Full Size, Pro, Match or Steel Frame. It excludes any PDP that comes with an optic already installed, naming the PDP Professional ACRO and SMU, plus Meister Manufaktur models. LE, VIP, and IOP discount purchases are out, and you must be at least 21. See Walther’s promo page.

How do I claim the Walther manufacturer rebate?

Buy a new qualifying Walther PDP between November 1 and December 31, 2026. Then submit your claim online at waltherpromos.com with a valid receipt showing that purchase, by 11:59 PM CT on January 31, 2027. Walther allows one redemption per serial number. If you buy more than one pistol, you may submit more than one claim. Walther says to allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing and handling.

Is the mounting plate included with the free optic?

No. Walther says the optic mounting plate is not included. It lists the Venom’s mounting footprint as DeltaPoint Pro. The PDP slide is optic ready, but you still need the correct plate to mount the sight. Our guide on which red dot fits your pistol is a useful starting point, and you should confirm fit against Walther’s promo terms before you order a plate.

Does a PDP that already ships with an optic qualify?

No. Walther excludes any PDP that comes with an optic preinstalled. It specifically names the PDP Professional ACRO and SMU, along with Meister Manufaktur models. If the pistol you are looking at already has a factory optic on the slide, this manufacturer rebate is not written for that gun. Check the exact model against Walther’s terms before you buy.
